Meditation can be defined as the technique of giving rest to your mind from daily thoughts and reach to a state of consciousness which is not similar to the normal waking state. Benefits of meditation are innumerable. Tops ones are

Tip #1: Pick a Peaceful Place

Although, meditation can be practiced anywhere, it is best to practice it in calm, peaceful and a non-cluttered place. Right atmosphere is very important in order to create the right mood for meditation.

Tip #2: Start Small

You do not have to start meditating for 15-20 minutes right from the very first day. For at least a week, meditate just for 2 minutes. If that goes completely well, then switch to 4 minutes. Keep on increasing your time for meditation by 2 minutes as soon as you get comfortable with it. If you manage to reach 10 minutes in the second month, that is simply amazing.

Tip #3: Ensure Correct Posture

It is very necessary to maintain correct posture during meditation, otherwise you can face some issues. There are several meditation postures out of which some are very tough while some are very easy. As a beginner, you should choose a posture which you find easy as well as comfortable. In whichever posture you sit, ensure that your spine is straight and you are not slumping.

Tip #4: Choose Appropriate Time

Ideally, the best time to mediate is right in the morning when you wake up. However, if you cannot do that then remember that you can meditate anytime you want. Just ensure that your mind is calm at that time. Also, ensure that no one disturbs you during that time.

Tip #5: Breathe Regularly

People often get so engrossed in focusing their mind that they often forget to breathe. Don’t do this mistake. Breathe deeply as well as regularly as it will contribute in relaxing your mind and body. If breathing deeply for the entire 10 minutes is tough for you, then you can breathe deeply for the initial 5 minutes and then slow it down.

Tip #6: Warm-up

Although, meditation is no intense workout, still you should warm-up before taking your position. You can practice some of the yoga warm-up exercises as these will improve your blood circulation in your body, remove inertia as well as restlessness. This is in turn will help your body feel lighter. As, a result, you will be able to sit and meditate for a longer time.

Tip #7: Let your Thoughts Pass By

While you are meditating, your mind will wander and some random thoughts will crop-up from nowhere. You cannot do anything about it as it is not in your hands. What is in your hands is to not get attached to these thoughts. Let them pass by and start over.

If you think too much about these thoughts and you’re not able to concentrate well, then you will get restless. Thus, it will be hard for you to relax and hence your purpose of meditation will not meet.

Tip #8: Count your Breaths

The best way to focus is to count your breaths. Our brain is a thought factory and hence thoughts are likely to crop-up even when you don’t want them to. Hence, the best way to divert your mind from these random thoughts is to count your breaths.

Tip #9: Smile

Smile as you meditate. This might sound lame but this is worth trying. You will soon observe the difference. A gentle smile on your face throughout meditation will keep your mind and body relaxed and calm. It will also enhance your meditation experience.

Tip #10: Make it a Routine

Do not look for excuses for not doing it. In fact find excuses to do it daily. Remember that only when you practice it daily, you will able to reap maximum benefits.
