Believe it or not but your anger is your biggest enemy. There is nothing in the world that can damage you more than your anger. In fact, not your anger, but the choices and decisions you make in your anger cause you the damage. This is simply because, when you are angry, you react without giving a single thought. Hence, you end up creating problems for yourself. Thus, it is very necessary to control your anger. How to do that? It is indeed a big and quite an important question. Listed below are five effective ways that can help you calm down your anger.

Breathe and Relax

Whenever you are angry take deep breaths, the kind of breaths you take while you are nervous. Deep breaths help you relax your body tension. It will also calm down your anger. This is because, when your body is relaxed, your mind will ease out. So, when anger clutches you, put your hands behind your head and inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Do this 3-4 times and then smile gently. Your anger will be gone and you will regain control over your thought process. You can try some other breathing exercises also that you’re comfortable with and each one is equally effective. Focus on your breaths and this will clear your mind of the reasons that made you angry.

Go for a Walk

When you are angry, you tend to get some extra energy, from the excess hormonal activity. Instead of using this energy for shouting or breaking someone’s teeth, it is better to put it to good use. Go for a walk. It will have two benefits. Firstly, you will not hurt someone physically or emotionally and secondly, it will be good for your health. When you are angry, you tend to walk faster than normal. Imagine the amount of calories that you will burn. Moreover, when you decide to go for a walk during a heated argument, it will give you some time to cool down. Also, it will prevent you from responding instantly.

Dance

Dance is undoubtedly one of the best forms of entertainment. Also, it can be of great use when you are very angry with someone. Dance, really? This would be probably the last thing you would want to do when you’re angry, isn’t it? Well, it is one of the most easy and effective way to cool down your anger. Just put on your favorite music and dance it out. There is no one judging you so you don’t need to perfect your moves. Just do what you feel like and you will feel relaxed and anger will be gone. Both music and dance are good for distracting your mind toxic impulses.

Count Backwards

When anger clutches you, start counting backwards from 10 to 1. If your level of anger is too high, you must count from 50 to 1. While doing so, your focus will shift to counting and your anger will vanish. If it does not then start counting again till you calm down completely.

Mindfulness

Whenever you get angry, rate it on a scale of 1 to 10. Thus, your focus will shift on observing your anger instead of actually getting angry. Also, when you realize that your anger level is very high, try to keep a distance from it. You must also try to find the actual reason behind getting angry. Then you must ask yourself, if the reason was really worth getting angry. If yes, then up to what level is it justified. This will help you analyse your anger and you will be able to develop a process of responding rather than reacting when such a situation occurs again.

Decisions made in anger leads to destruction, either emotional or physical or both. So, whenever you get angry, try to calm yourself down as quickly as possible. This is because, it takes years to build a relationship but only a few moments of anger to break it.
